Upchurch lies close to the southern edge of the Medway Estuary, a short distance to the north east of Rainham in Kent.

Edmund Drake, the father of Francis Drake, was rector of Upchurch from 1560-1566. It is said that his son learnt his early seamanship skills in the nearby creeks and waterways of the Medway estuary.

The local area is popular for Walkers following the Saxon Shoreway
and Bird Watchers visiting the surrounding network of saltmarshes.
