Upchurch lies close to the southern edge of the Medway Estuary, a short distance to the north east of Rainham in Kent.
Edmund Drake, the father of Francis Drake, was rector of Upchurch from 1560-1566. It is said that his son learnt his early seamanship skills in the nearby creeks and waterways of the Medway estuary.
The local area is popular for Walkers following the Saxon Shoreway and Bird Watchers visiting the surrounding network of saltmarshes.
Local places to visit include: Riverside Country Park Rainham, The Barn Yard Gore Farm Upchurch, Elmley Marshes Isle of Sheppey, Upchurch River Valley Golf Club and the Edith May sailing barge moored at nearby Lower Halstow Creek.
